– A sad reminder

Tuesday this week started researchers at the University of Bergen the job of making the two ton heavy whale to a museumsobjekt.

In the stomach of the beast, they discovered that the stomach of the animal was full of plastic bags and less plastbiter.

– It was very sad to see. It is a sad reminder of what we are doing with the environment, and especially with the sea. It had so many plastic bags in the stomach and very little nutrition, explains us enough reason why the whale behaved so strange. There is no doubt that it has suffered, ” says zoologist and associate professor Terje Lislevand at the University of Bergen.

Not since the 80′s, researchers at the University of dismembered a whale.

Lislevand explains that gåsenebbhvalen any time eating octopus, but on their journey under the water, it has also therefore been in a lot of plastic.

Around 30 plastic bags, as well as less plastbiter, researchers found in the stomach. Only a few remnants of the squid was to find among all the plastic.

– We took plastic bags from both Denmark and the united Kingdom, so this is not just a Norwegian problem. But it is not so that we will relax in the Uk either, ” says Lislevand.

Marine litter is a growing problem. According to the Un environment programme (UNEP) ports the annual eight million tonnes of plastsøppel in the world’s oceans. Around 80 per cent is believed to originate from the activity and industry of the country, while the remaining from the activity on the sea.

A large number of birds, fish and other animals die each year as a result of damage from the waste.

Main problem: plastic

It can take anywhere from decades to several hundred years before the plastic breaks down. According to a report estimated that the plastics produced in the 1950s, and still is, to find.

for example, It can take 450 years before a plastic bottle breaks down, while it can take up to 600 years before fisketråd is broken down.

It seems in many ways that we look at the sea as an infinite trash, and what we have done in a long time. So it is important that we are reminded on this issue, ” says Lislevand.
