Magistrate Fire case: Man sentenced to 18 years in detention – NRK

The 39-year old man from Hamar was indicted for a variety of criminal offenses, including for fire to the house of Judge Ola P. Rind, arson, attempted murder of five people, vandalism of NOK 7.6 million, to having sprayed ammonia on police and threats against several people including police prosecutors and police officers.

Now he is found guilty of 34 violations of 22 articles of the Penal Code, and sentenced to 18 years in detention.

– Our client is very clear that he is improperly convicted. The verdict will be appealed, said the man’s lawyer, Thomas Randby, told NRK.

in line with the prosecutor’s assertion

the judgment is in line with the prosecutor’s contention that laid the claim 18 years of defending, with a minimum term of 10 years.

– My immediate comment is that I konstateter that the court has agreed with us, both in our assessment of the case and the reaction form, says prosecutor Tormod Bakke.



AKTOR : Former police chief in Oslo, Tormod Bakke was the prosecutor in the case. He added the claim 18 years of detention, and the court agreed with the prosecution assessment and response form.

He notes that it is anticipated that there would be an appeal, saying that there has been a particular issue.

– The case has been very extensive. It has taken time, necessarily, since there have been nearly 100 witnesses. It reflects both that there have been many factors and that the matter is very serious.



The man has been charged with:

  • arson after he allegedly set fire to the house of the magistrate in Hamar.
  • premeditated murder attempt magistrate, his wife and daughter, and a friend of her daughter.
  • vandalism for 7.6 million kroner after the fire in the Magistrate’s residence.
  • arson after he allegedly tried to get another man to light a house.
  • attempted murder of the woman who lived in the house.
  • threatening magistrate and a police lawyer.
  • to have threatened several people, including two journalists
  • having tried to harm two police officers by Come ammonia on them
  • to have abused his former partner and daughter from august 2013 to October 2014
  • having beaten two other people and taken a stranglehold on a third person
  • to have made a false police evidence
  • to have issued out to be a police officer at a hospital in Oslo
  • to have molested a police sergeant
  • having performed criminal damage to a car and a door
  • to have smuggled drugs to Norway
  • not to have been enough cautious in traffic so he went off the road
  • troublesome / frightening behavior against, among others, two police of officers
  • violating a restraining order by sending a letter addressed to his former wife, while he was in prison

Svein Holden, counsel for the judge Ola P. rind and his family, said the family is happy verdict, because the case has been a bothersome.

– there is no doubt that there has been a long journey for the family, and it has been a burden to experience what they have done. They are pleased that this first court round is over.

He further says that the family take it calmly that the case is appealed.

– It was family well prepared. So now the family simply forward to the next round, and to be able to put the matter behind him for good.

TOTAL DAMAGED : the house of the Magistrate was completely destroyed in the fire. His daughter and her friend managed to save himself from the burning house.

lasted for two months

the case went to South Østerdal District Court for almost two months, including, were placed approximately 90 witnesses.

Police main evidence against him was his ex-wife and a fellow inmates who both say that the man told them he was behind the fire.

the man has always denied guilt on all counts.
