– the report confirms is that Norwegian schools are unable to provide all immigrant children the opportunities they will have. And it can be a big problem in the future because many children then do not get the opportunity they need to survive, says Isaksen.

Refugee children costs even more

our sent a report states that the social costs by not giving refugee children education is almost 4 million for each child.

But immigrant who has come here for a family reunion or children of the working mind walkers , need training.

the costs of not to invest in the education of this group are also high – around 2.6 million crowns.

To calculate the expenses

the report estimates the researchers found that 80 percent of immigrant children with deficient education are finding work, but because of low skills they receive lower wages than average.

Those who did not come up at work leads to increased costs for the public, because those who do not have jobs may need social security or social assistance. In addition to stand outside the workplace often provide health, psychological and social challenges for the individual.

The consequences are serious, says the Minister.

– at worst, it leads to that we get children who can not read and write well enough, can not work, you will struggle to get through secondary education, struggle to get into the labor market. We amplifies the differences between majority Norwegians and Norwegians with immigrant backgrounds. That school is good enough is essential for the sake of integration, says Isaksen.

Although Røe Isaksen is clear that Norwegian schools are not good enough to handle these tasks today, he is also quite aware that the school in the future will do it.

– what we know is that good schools can lift all students. And to invest in good training, professional updating, more educational, more early intervention – that, I think is the key to lifting also immigrant children.

Requires more teachers

Good schools will only happen when we get more teachers, says deputy head of the teachers’ Union, Terje Push Ulstad.

– we believe that the more time teachers will make it possible to have smaller classes, and is absolutely essential that schools can do an even better job than now. But we are also pleased that the government says that doing nothing now, also costs money. We can agree that an investment in education is a good investment for society and the individual, says Push Ulstad.

He agrees with the minister when Røe Isaksen rejects question of whether we can afford to solve this task.

– We can not afford to have a school that does not give children the education and knowledge they require, Isaksen concludes.
