Brexit stirs up debate on the EEA – Bergens Tidende

Norway must seize the opportunity and secure a better deal with the EU now that the British withdraw, requiring politicians from several parties. But Prime Minister Erna Solberg (H) would rather put on hold.

– There are some who will always discuss the EEA Agreement in Norway because they are against it, but I think the broad majority of Norwegian parties believe this is solid, says Solberg questions from NTB.

She dismisses the claim that has come from several parties that Norway should seize the opportunity to negotiate a better EEA agreement now that the UK has been to leave the EU.

– EEA steady. There is no reason to create unrest about it, the Prime Minister said.

Seeing opportunities

Centre Party leader Trygve Slagsvold Vedum, SV leader Audun Lysbakken and Red’s leader Bjørnar Moxnes is among those who believe British EU withdrawal also allows for a renegotiation of Norway.

– the British have made it clear that they will not accept an EEA agreement. There is no reason why we should do it either. With brexit will get an alternative to the undemocratic EEA Agreement which will also involve new opportunities for Norway, says Moxnes.

According Lysbakken can now be opened up for several forms of cooperation in Europe.

– UK and EU will have to agree on some kind of trade agreement, and the British are clear that they do not want an EEA agreement, says Lysbakken, urging the government to make itself ready to seize the opportunities this offers .

– This is a completely new situation. Our main responsibility now is to do what’s best for Norway, says Lysbakken.

Warns naivete

Europe Minister Elisabeth Aspaker (H) believes that it is naive and illusory to believe that Norway can negotiate a better agreement with the EU just because Britain withdraws.

– the EEA agreement is the foundation, the servant Norway very well. There is no reason to cast doubt on the deal, turning Aspaker ascertains to NTB.

She warns against believing that the European Union will premiere the UK with a better deal than the Norway received.

Aspaker looks Committee believes that Norway must negotiate a series of new bilateral agreements with the United Kingdom in areas currently covered by the EEA agreement.

– the problem is that no side in the UK have not presented any solutions this, says Aspaker.

– Should await

Neither Labor leader Jonas Gahr Støre believes that the Brits will get some gold edged agreement with the EU.

– the EU will hardly agree to a deal that could make it attractive for other countries to withdraw, he said.

Minister warns against putting the EEA agreement in play.

– in Norway we should await the situation, monitor developments closely and take good care of the EEA agreement which have served us well for over 20 years, he said.
