Only 11 of the 41 sunscreens get approved stamp – Bergens Tidende

The Consumer Council has put 41 sunscreens under scrutiny. The risk that you use a sunscreen with problematic substances is large, they believe.

Which sunscreen should you choose to you or your children?

Consumer Council checked 41 sunscreens on the market for endocrine disrupters, allergenic substances or chemical substances in nano form.

Many of sunscreens get red faces, only 11 get smileys and approved stamp.

SEE CHART HERE.

– It is unfortunately not only sun you should protect yourself against. Choose a sunscreen with green faces or Swan then you are on the safe side when you rub you and yours, says consumer director Randi Flesland.

Of the 41 sunscreens tested includes:

  • 21 endocrine disrupters
  • 11 allergenic substances
  • 14 chemical substances in nano form

the danger of spray

Off the 16 sunscreens in the test which is intended for children, contains over half (9) endocrine disrupters. Several creams also allergy-causing substances and chemical substances in nano form.

– Children are most vulnerable, and it is particularly unfortunate that these sunscreens contain endocrine disrupters, as well as other chemicals that give cause for concern, says Flesland.

All products were purchased in Norwegian grocery stores, pharmacies and perfumeries in May 2016.

the Consumer Council has examined the ingredient list of products, and then categorized them.

  • Products containing suspected endocrine disrupters assigned frowning face.
  • Products containing allergenic substances or chemical substances in nano form has got yellow, skeptical faces.
  • Products not contains some of these substances have been given the green smiley.

Buy svanemerket sunscreen. In addition to pay attention to health and the environment in general, have these been tested for both perfume, allergenic substances and endocrine disrupters.

To avoid allergenic fragrances, purchase products without perfume.

Substances in nano form shall be marked in all cosmetics. In the ingredient list on the sunscreen must therefore stand nano behind all chemicals in nano form.

If you have a choice – buy nor cream than spray so as to avoid inhaling chemicals.

And enjoy the sun, but use sunscreen to avoid sunburn.

If you stand and to buy sunscreen and do not know what to look for, the easiest thing for most people is to choose Swan-labeled products Council Consumer Council.

Parents should otherwise be aware that spray can be worse than cream. Use one of sunscreens that have not been approved stamp, the particles can be easily inhaled in addition to that it applied to the skin.

Focus on chemicals

The Consumer Council has in the past years had extra focus on allergies and chemicals in products.

the Bellona Foundation has also a guide on how to live as toxic as possible. Ecolabelling Norway, Swan label also theme pages on chemicals.

Over the past year we have written about several of the tests Consumer Council has conducted, as well as statements from them concerning chemicals in products.

pharmacist repeats criticism Consumer Council

Last year’s test gave rise to some negative attention. Pharmacist Marte Gaarder wrote the post: It’s Consumer Council warnings that are dangerous, not sunscreen. Lubricate the way!

She repeats criticism this year.

– Although the test this year is new does not mean that the tests have changed to any great extent. Norway is constantly on top in mole cancer, the importance of smear themselves well enough, often enough, with proper factor compared to their skin type is ever anything we want and focus on. Remember a handful to a body, each second, third hour and remember breaks from the sun when it is at its strongest (between the hours 12-15). Remember solvettreglene, says Gaarder.

She thinks Consumer Council should have focused on whether the factor delivers what it promises.

– UVB protection that stands on the packaging / UVA protection should always be 1 / 3 of UVB declared. It had been useful information in the jungle of sunscreens out there, she says.

Gaarder points out that parabens are safe to use, and negative attention from, among others, the Consumer Council on these has led to increased blooms of allergies due by using other preservatives

Consumer Council: the scholars disagree

the Consumer Council has previously been out and defended why it is critical to nanomaterials in sunscreen.

there is a standpoint Flesland repeat today:

– We see that different researchers emphasize different things, the scholars disagree. But we and our partners abroad, leaning on us heavy, recognized research that says this is not okay. It’s actually “precautionary principle” should apply, we should not use people, our children as guinea pigs.

Consumer Council specifies that their most important advice is : Use sunscreen .

– the sun provides greater harm than sunscreen, there is a general knowledge that everyone has. But we are concerned that consumers will know which sunscreens that have potentially fewest harmful substances and select them. When 11 products tests for approval, it shows that it is actually possible to create sunscreens without these harmful substances, says Flesland.

Excludes not focus on labeling

technical director Gunstein Instefjord does not preclude UVA / UVB labeling may be a more important issue forward, c.f. what an American survey shows that 4 of 10 sunscreens do not keep their promise.

– But the reason that we have been less concerned about this in our test is that the Norwegian Food Safety studies indicate that in this area things more on care. Sunscreens in the Norwegian market keeps a greater extent the laws concerning protection, he said.

– Look for ISO designation that would show whether they follow international standards on product and UVA / UVB circled to find creams that protect against both types of radiation in line with EU recommendations.
