must be seen over time

– I tend not to look at murder from year to year, it must be large societal changes to before changes in killing pattern. In stable countries like Norway, it becomes necessary to look at longer time images, says criminologist and murder researcher Vibeke Ottesen said.

She refers to 2013, when the Criminal Police registered 42 murder cases with 45 victims. It was numerically significantly higher than the year before, when 28 killings were investigated, and Ottesen believes the media helped create unnecessary concern among the general public.

– One should be careful in comparing year to year, warns murder researcher.

close relationships

Kill in close relationships make up about half of the cases in Norway when one looks at century over time.

it is the same so far this year. Four of the twelve cases involved the police believe is partner homicide and two of murder cases are adult men charged with having killed his mother or father. In addition, one case where a tenant has admitted having killed the female his landlord at Evanger in Voss.

In the area we differ from countries like the US and UK, where the proportion of homicides where the perpetrator and the victim not is in a close relationship is significantly higher – which according Ottesen interrelated with generally low crime in Norway.

ethnic background

In four of the twelve homicides so far they have accused – and victims – a different ethnic background than Norwegian.

– We know that marginalized groups, such as ethnicity, in any society is vulnerable to becoming perpetrators or victims, also when it comes to murder. They do not have the same network and opportunities, explaining homicide researcher Ottesen.

No unsolved

So far, none of the cases in 2016 progressed so far that the prosecution question is settled, but none of the cases is without suspects or accused. The last four years considers the police all the cases were solved.

– Kills figures in Norway are on their way down, because of access to medical care, but it also has something about how Norway is as a society. It is important to research the murder and see trends over time to identify which groups are vulnerable and how to prevent, says Vibeke Ottesen.
