Norwegian youth will liberalize biotechnology policy – Aftenposten

Over 1,000 students from 62 classes in 17 counties participated in the survey in the project Youth bioteknologiråd. The answers show that young people say yes to paid surrogacy.

They say yes to genetic testing of children, but not to identify properties that do not have the disease to do.

Furthermore, says the youth agreed to freeze eggs for non-medical use, even DNA database, and yes to artificial insemination for single women, writes Our Country.

Høie: – Can change stance

Health Minister Bent Høie ( H) and Biotechnology Council leader Kristin Halvorsen received Friday a presentation of youth views on biotechnology.

When asked Høie fear further liberalization when the youngsters are old enough to control society, he replied:

– It may well be, or they may change position after a while.

Surprised figures

Young Researcher Viggo Vestel at the Norwegian Institute for Research on Adolescence, welfare and aging ( NOVA) is surprised figures in the survey.

He believes that young generation in almost all areas have approached grow generation, but notes that it does not happen in biotechnology issues.

He thinks it may be because young people have greater trust and confidence in technological development, but it may also be that the young have not taken into account the fact complicated issues affecting ethics, believes he said.
