– We are following the situation closely and has regular contact with hydro throughout the evening and afternoon, and then comes the evacuation to be considered again, said emergency coordinator in Luster, Jan Magne Svåi, to TV 2.

Police in Luster in Sogn og Fjordane went Friday out with warning against that there may be landslides in a short time as a result of extreme snowmelt on Hardbardsbreen.

The snow melting can cause large amounts of water in Fortunsdalen and police are considering evacuation.

– The message from NVE is that it can come ras today or tomorrow as due to large amounts of water. We are now considering whether we should start the evacuation, said operations manager Espen Gulliksen to TV2.

THIS IS jökulhlaup

A jökulhlaup is a sudden flood from a bredemmet lake. Such lakes can be formed along the edge of the glacier, the glacier or under the glacier, or in front of the glacier where a moraine dams up the river from the glacier.

When water first begins to run under, through or over the glacier or moraine, the melting and erosion expand the canal so that the water flow out of the lake is increasing rapidly.

Much of the lake can be emptied in a short period of time (hours to days), so that the flood can be fierce. Such floods have caused major damage.

A recognized method to prevent or reduce jökulhlaup potential harm, is lowering the water level in the lake permanently. Where the lake is dammed by glacier created tunnels through mountains. This has been done by Hardangerjøkulen (Demme lake) and at Austerdalsbreen Isen (Svartisen).

In morenedemmte lakes in front of the glacier created reinforced overflow – often in combination with permanent lowering of the lake level.

The police have sent out both the Response Team and sheriff to make assessments on the spot.

The phenomenon called jökulhlaup and described as a sudden flood from a bredemmet lake on, under or in front of the glacier, writes NVE. Previously NVE described the phenomenon as unusual in Norway.

– This is a phenomenon we have mapped that could happen a couple of places in Norway, otherwise it is a phenomenon one In areas such as the Himalayas, said chief engineer of NVE to NRK in 2013 when jökulhlaup occurred in North Troms.

Residents in Fortunsdalen now receive a warning that it can be implemented evacuation in a short time.

Police have continuous contact with NVE and fylkensmannens preparedness team in addition to the municipality.

– We keep on obtaining section now, but we want to be early since we have received this notification, says Gulliksen to TV 2.

5.5 million cubic water

Regional Manager in NVE, brigt Samdal, say they think the situation will evolve over the next 24-48 hours.

– We are talking about a broad front that could collapse. 5.5 million cubic meters of water could hit the water reservoirs. We think the magazine takes for the most part, but we expect that it will flooded and water continue down the valley, says Samdal.

He says further that the work is a collaboration between the municipality, police, Hydro and NVE.

– We can not do as much with the actual incident, but we can make action that prevents damage. It will be a combination of stone, gravel and water bodies that will hit the valley, says Samdal.

Blocks of ice slid from glacier

Earlier this week went mayor Ivar Kvalen in Luster and warned other consequences of glacier melt . Several large boulders slid out from Nigardsbreen, and Sogn Avis said Kvalen that the public must be careful.

– There is nothing dramatic situation yet, but it is important that people do not go away to brtefronten past August, said Kvalen the newspaper.
