Jarle Andhøy acquitted – Dagsavisen

Jarle Andhøy in Nord-Troms District Court acquitted after his last expedition to Antarctica. The court accepted that he had received the necessary permits to sail to Antarctica from Argentina.

Andhøy lawyer Brynjar Østgård said his client is pleased with the verdict.

– He is acquitted and satisfied with it. He’s been believed that he perceived to have the necessary Argentine permission. Whether the permit is correct or not, does not matter, because he had reason to believe that it was appropriate body which had issued it. It is sufficient to be acquitted, and then the court have had to proceed with the case. He has acted with due care in relation to the rules in force, says Andhøy lawyer Brynjar Østgård.

Andhøy notified not from the Norwegian Polar Institute that he would sail south of the 60th parallel. He had not made insurance coverage.

The prosecutor in the case said Jarle Andhøy not had the necessary permits to sail to Antarctica, and would sentence him to 30-day suspended jail and to pay a fine of 45,000 crowns.

Jarle Andhøy said NTB during the trial that it was only when he realized that the case in Tromsø could end in jail time picking expedition member Juan Manuel Hernandez to bring documents from Argentina to Norway.

– I was long thought that this was another round in court that would end with another penalty. But then I realized that the indictment may end with a prison sentence, I took hold, he said. (NTB)
