- Fears that the children be taken from them if they give birth in Norwegian hospitals – Dagbladet.no

(Dagbladet): In a new report from the Council of Europe are Norway harsh criticism for its treatment of Roma people and their children, according to Sveriges Radio.

Council of Europe menneskrettskommissær, Nils Muiznieks, are very concerned about what he describes as a very frequent placement of children of Roma families in foster care.

According to the report about half of Norwegian-born Roma children forcibly placed in foster homes or institutions. This represents a total of 60 children, the report said.

– Many pregnant Roma women avoid traveling to Norwegian hospital to give birth because they fear that the child will be taken by the CPS, writes Human Rights Commissioner in the report.

It is clear however from the report how numbers on tvangsplasssering of children are taken from.

The government says in a response to the Council of Europe that Norway user registration is people from ethnic background and therefore can not comment on information, according to Sveriges Radio.

– Our legislation puts great emphasis on family ties and continuity in upbringing, but also on the child’s right to be protected from all forms of violence, abuse and neglect, according to the letter of reply.

It is claimed that the child tries to take care of the child’s cultural background.

Also, the Norwegian authorities’ treatment of visiting rooms and beggars are criticized in the report. Muiznieks is pleased that the proposal for a national begging bans are dropped, but points out that local bans may be a violation of human rights.

– A total ban on non-aggressive begging has a discriminatory impact on room-migrants and violate freedom of expression. Such prohibitions should be abolished, he said.
