One found dead in avalanche on Svalbard – Aftenposten

The deceased and a snowmobile found in Fardalen about seven kilometers south of Longyearbyen. Landslide is large and goes scooter trail in the valley, said the Governor.

Fardalen is a popular destination. It lies on the route to Colesbukta and is one of the most common routes to the Russian mining town of Barentsburg.

– The only thing we can confirm yet is that one person is found dead. Now there are people on the site that investigates further. We do not know whether there may be other persons, says communication Tone Hertzberg Svalbard Posten.

She will not yet say anything about gender, age or nationality.

18 people from the Red Cross and two from the Governor is now investigating the area after an escalation earlier Saturday afternoon.

– It’s taken several people from both the Governor and the Red Cross to obtain a better overview of the situation, told Hertzberg.

The landslide is described as large, and going over the snowmobile trail.

The Governor received notification exceeded in Fardalen, about a half mile south of Longyearbyen passport, at 11:39 today.

Exploration crews now believe landslide struck Saturday morning

Fardalen is a widely used recreation sore from Longyearbyen.
