Høie and Listhaug battle against antibiotic resistance – Dagbladet.no

Health Minister Bent Høie (H) along with Agriculture Minister Sylvi Listhaug (FRP) prepare a strategy this spring to overcome antibiotic resistance.

– Serious consequences

– We face a dramatic situation if we do not succeeded in overcoming antibiotic resistance. It is only a matter of time before the antibiotic is not effective, says Høie to Dagens Næringsliv.

According to estimates around 25,000 people die each year in Europe because of antibiotic resistance. The world community must act quickly to reverse the trend, says the Minister.

– Are we not, the consequence will be that serious diseases like cancer can not be treated, and that diseases today are not serious, can be severe, says Høie.

Develops strategy

The Government has decided to develop a strategy involving the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Agriculture, Industry and Fisheries Ministry and Ministry of the Environment.

A plan should be ready in the spring.

Listhaug has the political responsibility to combat antibiotic resistance among animals. Høie has similar responsibilities for humans.
