Petrochemicals giant Ineos confirmed earlier in March that the first shipment of ethane gas left Philadelphia, USA, bound for Norway.

– this agreement will ensure competitive raw material for 15 years, so this is a great day for us, says Ineos director Magnar Bakke.

the Dragon Class Ship “INEOS Intrepid” , the world’s largest of its kind, is loaded with 27,500 cubic meters of American ethane gas.

– Hugely ambitious

Ineos founder Jim Ratcliffe believes company is one of very few in the world who could succeed with such a project.

– We are nearing the end of a hugely ambitious project that has taken us five years and I am proud of everyone involved in it, and I think Ineos is one of very few companies in the world that had the prerequisite to the success of this says Ineos founder Jim Ratcliffe.

This is the first time ethane gas from the United states has been imported into Europe and Ineos has chosen Norway and Bamble in Telemark as their first port of call.

‘Virtual gas pipeline’ between the United States and Norway

– the idea we have now takes 35,000 m³, and then we have another tank too, so together we have good capacity to store ethane, says Ineos director Magnar Bakke.

– There are a lot of gas, but we need a lot of gas. It’s going to get a boat about once a week ahead, which makes it a kind of ‘virtual pipeline’ between the US and Norway where boats with gas going to go in the shuttle traffic over the next 15 years, says Bakke.

– Why choose Norway?

– We had the infrastructure in place, and Ineos-owners are looking at Norway as a good place to invest, and we have also shown that we can deliver the goods. We thought finished before the gas is supplied, and the test run and everything is in order. We really looked forward to this day. It’s a new era for us, says Ineos director Magnar Bakke.

Ethane Gas is mainly used for the production of plastics.

– the ethane ‘cracker’ we [breaks up ethane and propane molecules to produce plastic production, journ.anm.] before we send it on to the plant that VCM and PVC, which is a famous plastic product. We also make polyethylene with other information on the inside and outside of the milk carton your medical packaging and many other things we use in daily life, says Bakke.
