On Sunday afternoon, the alarm went off. A person had fallen from Russelvfjellet North Lenangen in Lyngen. The man fell several hundred meters down, and should have been buried in the snow at the bottom of the mountain. On top was the rest of the tour mates standing helpless to see that his friend slid down the mountainside.

Steep terrain
The German man (50) was seriously injured after the fall, and was flown to University Hospital in Tromso for treatment. Norwegian People’s Aid department in Lyngen moved quickly to the top of Russelvfjellet to take care of tour mates who were left behind.
– It is very steep to get up, but crews are accustomed to scramble here. We had a similar event at Easter last year, said the guard leader Elaine Lindbæk Norwegian People’s Aid to Nordlys.
Embossed
He can not answer what caused the incident, but an avalanche expert stated Nordlys little earlier Sunday that it is most likely to be a snow-dune that has raged out.

– We leave it to the police to uncover what has happened, and how it could have happened. I will not speculate on this, says Lindbæk.
Once down from the mountain, tour mates taken care of Lyngen Municipality crisis team.
– They are marked by the incident, but they are taken care of now by emergency staff in Lyngen, says Lindbæk.
Still critical
Nordlys contacted pressure guard at the University Hospital at 22.00. Per Christian Johansen says that the condition is still critical.
– I was just in contact with the doctor, and she could tell that the condition is still critical for the man. The doctor did not expect that the state would change appreciably in the next few hours, says Johansen.
