WWF wolf suggestions: – Rather than pepper balls – VG

Animal Shelters and ulveeskperter are skeptical Centre Party’s proposal to use pepper spray against wolves. But not because they are worried that the wolf will be damaged.

The reason that both animal rights experts on wolf seems Centre Party new proposals against wolf sounds inefficient out, is that wolves are mainly so shy that it not come close enough that you can use pepper spray.

– The wolf is one of the skyeste animals that exist, and very few are lucky enough to at all get seen a wolf on long distance, points Nina Jensen WWF Norway.

– If one comes close to wolves, so will probably other means, such as loud noise, being more effective to scare it away, she continues.

Martial

The proposal came on congress to the Centre from the county made in Hedmark:

** People who have dangerous predators in their communities, to get permission to acquire pepper spray self-defense, according to the proposal.

– We’re going with this proposal because many people contact us and say that they are afraid of wolves, says fylkesleder Hedmark Sp, Aasa Gjestvang Hedmark FRP VG.

But just as important for Sp is probably the subsidiary point in the original proposal:

** Wolf who show no natural shyness of people, should be taken out, it says there.

– If it stands between pepper spray and that wolves are shot, then pepper better than bullets, says Jensen WWF.

Must tested

She says the proposal must be considered by professionals for that to be taken seriously, but she knows that pepper spray has been used effectively against polar bear.

– But outdoors, with the weather, so there is a risk that it is the triggering pepper spray that gets it in the face, so it may seem totally counterproductive, says Jensen.

– Whether it will permanently damage to animals, I do not know, she continues.

The Center believes townspeople who do not have animals close to the body does not know how it feels:

– I think you living in Oslo do not understand how it is perceived to have predators, especially wolves, close to him. In parts of Hedmark, particularly in South Eastern Valleys, this is something many people experience, says Gjestvang.

Q show particularly that a wolf pack of six wolves in winter several times came completely into the courtyard in a farm Northern Osen, an issue that has received much coverage in the local newspaper Østlendingen.

Used to bear

Wolf Expert January Huseklepp Wilberg in the State Nature confirms that the wolves were unusually aggressive, but he also points out that wolves are usually very shy.

– I’ve even gone with pepper spray in the belt traveling in Alaska and Canada, but that is because they use it against bears there. Both black bears and grizzly bears can be aggressive towards people, but I’ve never heard of pepper spray against wolves, says Wilberg.

– Pepper Spray is the illegal in Norway, with the exception of police, how this will be enforced know I’d rather not, he continued.

In conflict with livestock

Animal Protection Alliance, which works to protect Norwegian livestock is concerned conflicts between domesticated and predators, but information manager Live Kleveland points out that wolves are not in direct conflict with humans.

– This is a very original proposal, but I do not know how realistic it is. I find it difficult that you should get close enough to use pepper spray, because wolves are afraid of people, says Kleveland.

– It may be possible that getting pepper spray against them may have the effect that wolves will be scared away for a long period, I do not know enough about, but wolves can be frightened away by creating loud noises, she continues, adding:

– That people are so afraid of wolves builds myths, they are not dangerous to humans. In conflicts between domesticated and predators Humane Alliance committed to finding solutions where one gets divorced these animals, so none of them suffer.
