– I have not seen it so bad before. Stomach was full of pure pellets, says the fisherman, as Monday got saithe in the picture.
The fish were caught on yarn by Fosnstraumbrua just outside Austrheim, about one kilometer away from the nearest farms, writes bt.no.
Full of whole pellets
The fisherman, who did not want to be named, says he never got fish with pellets in the stomach in this area before.
– And it was forceful. It looked like it was just before it had eaten to death, the man says.
Seien must have been about two kilograms, and that out from the picture, it was not long ago it had eaten his last meal. The last pellet had not yet dissolved, when the fish were gutted.
– It was enormously fat. I figured it was something once, when I saw it, says the fisherman, who despite the somewhat unappetizing sight has made the fish is ready to eat.
Scientist: Have not seen so much before
Senior Researcher at the Institute of Marine Research Station in Austevoll, Terje van der Meer, also reacts when he gets the picture of the fish.
– I’ve seen saithe with much pellets in the stomach before, but not so much like this, says senior researcher who has researched fish for over 30 years.
He believes saithe must stood a good while under the farm to get in so much fodder. According senior researcher will also be able to see effects on fish liver as a result of the large quantities of salmon feed the ingested.
– Sei who eat salmon over time, will have great lives, because in contrast to salmon will save much of the fat from the feed there, explains van der Meeren.
– Can be overfeeding
He stands also puzzled by what procedures the farm fish have stayed at have with considering feeding.
– This has so much fodder that here it may be a matter of overfeeding by farm. That something fodder goes out of cages is normal, but this has been lucky and gotten very much, says van der Meeren
.He tells that there will not be any physical problem for the fish to take part in as large amounts of food. According senior researcher eat coalfish it it comes across, and he even has also seen saithe with stomach full of jellyfish.
– I do not think they are eating themselves to death. Saithe prey in the sea is unevenly distributed, and therefore fill up when it has the opportunity, explains van der Meeren.
