Rockslide closes E16 Sogn – Bergens Tidende

Several large rocks slid down the mountainside. No cars were taken in the slide on E16 through Sogn.

Around two kilometers west of Gudvangen on the E16 in Sogn, raged Tuesday afternoon four large stones into the road.

No cars were taken off the slide.

– there is a risk that it is going to breed more. It now sent a geologist to the site. This may take time, says traffic operator at road traffic center in Laerdal, Ketil Molvaer.

Operations Olaug Holme police in New Jersey says that the slide extends over 300 meters. There are big holes in the road.

Holme says there is little reason to believe that E16 will be opened today.

Molvaer emphasize that we are talking about a huge landslide, and that the road is closed indefinitely.

– There will detour over Vikafjellet for those going to the inner part of the parish, and elsewhere across the plateau, said Molvaer.

– Rescued many lives

Johnny Steensen and buddy Roar Gilbu was at Gudvangen camping when they heard two landslide go.

– We saw that ras number three came, and we threw ourselves in the car to stop traffic, says Steensen .

He says that races had gone about 400 meters from the campsite. While the stones rolled down the mountainside, only 50-100 meters from where they stood, focused Steensen at getting people to safety.

– Were not you scared?

– Well, so far, but I concentrated on getting stopped traffic, and make sure no one ran into the slide. While landslides took place, two three cars coming toward us, they’d panic, he said.

He says that he is now at home and security, and that only now dawned on him what he has been involved in.

– the pulse is higher now than it was when I was standing there, he said.

it was BergensAvisen who first mentioned that Steensen and his buddy ran off to stop traffic.

– the two saved many lives, she says to BT.

Fighting Steiner

From Vang camping in Gudvangen see Stine Larsen Ramsøy right to slide on Gudvangaflatene.

– It is dangerously close, around one to one and a half kilometers away from the stretch of road, she said.

From high in the mountains have boulders fell down, probably a couple of kilometers, according her before they hit the road.

– there are large rocks that have taken both the bush, she said.

In addition to the four large stones which came first, it also come stones down sides since.

Several tunnels are shut due to avalanche, probably so that it will not form a queue in the tunnels. Flenjatunnelen, Gudvanga Tunnel and Stalheim tunnels are all closed, according to road traffic center.

– So it came lot of smoke

Eva Spord from Bergen drove past just before rock slide, and was thus probably among the very last one passed. In the car she heard a tremendous noise, and thought it was from the river.

When she turned to the petrol station at Gudvangen to grab a coffee.

– So I saw that there was lots of smoke. The tourists were suddenly on the same and started taking pictures, says Spord.

Since then she stood in line against Flenjatunnelen, where it was blocked in both directions . Around 18.15, traffic in the eastbound direction opened, so that she and the others in the queue were running on.

Several stretches along the E16 is susceptible to landslides, but breeds in the past year has mainly been on the Bergen-Voss, latest in June. In 2014 went a huge rockslide in Nærøy Valley at Gudvangen, at Hylland on E16 between Gudvangen and Stalheim, not far away.

This is the approximate location of the slide today:
