Max Hermansen has recently been permanently employed in Oslo schools. Last fall he began as a teacher in social studies for six classes by cube and Etterstad high schools. Hermansen estimates saying that nearly half of his students have a Muslim background. At school discovered many of the students that Hermansen is against Islam.
– They must have been curious when they got a new teacher, and they found information about me on Facebook, said Hermansen.
He does not want to say how students reacted but Osloby know why this should have created conflicts with students. Hermansen has been on sick leave from his job since October. Although he says that he clearly separates the role of teacher and activity in the new movement calling itself Pegida, an abbreviation for Patriotic Europeans towards Islamization of the West.
– I try to be a professional teacher who follows the curriculum . I have otherwise been instructed not to comment on matters relating to my job. I will not focus on me in this matter. I would focus on the elephant in the room, said Hermansen.
Sent complain
Youssef (17) is one of the students Hermansen had on cube. Youssef says that they had Hermansen in social sciences in about three weeks.
– In their first or second hour told Max that had called the king for a fjott and that it was written an article about it. When we searched the internet, we saw that he had written that “Islam is a virus”. He had also written “send asylum seekers back to Morocco.” As norskmarokkaner I reacted to it. Then I was thrown out of hours, says Youssef.
According to him, it was never anything properly teaching in social studies after that.
– Most students in the class are Muslims. There were many discussions about Islam and not much teaching. Finally, we sent a complaint on him. Then we got a new teacher, says Youssef.
– Hermansen says he divides the role of teacher and active in Pegida. Could not you accepted him as a teacher?
– He is against my religion and denigrates it. I do not think that I would have managed to have him as a teacher.
Private Person
Kjell Ove Hauge is rector of cube, which together have nearly 1,500 students. He does not want to go into details of this matter.
– The Hermansen do as an individual, is his choice, but what he does as a teacher, shall be within the curriculum. I do not want to go into the matter. About this issue creates little noise and is a hot topic right now, so we still focus on training. We want to handle the matter internally, says Hauge.
He also refers to the Governing Mayor Stian Berger Røsland (H), uttering NTB Monday. – Oslo’s 50,000 employees have less freedom of expression than others. They are free to express their opinion on various issues, including politics, religion and history, says Røsland.
