The police can too little about hate crimes – TV 2

– Police Directorate is aware that police districts have different focus on hate crimes, writes section chief Erling Børstad in Police Directorate (POD) in a letter to the Oslo police, as Our Country reproduces parts of Friday.

– There are major differences in districts knowledge and expertise about what is hate crimes and how cases are coded and reported. Each police officer must be able to recognize hate crimes and thus help to ensure that those who report getting good treatment, emphasizes Børstad.

Last fall acknowledged police management that hate crimes are not coded as it are in the outlying districts. “The reviews have shown that individual reviews should be coded with a motive related to hatred and prejudice, but where this has not been done,” said in a letter from the POD.

In order to strengthen competence shall be in year organized a national seminar on hate crimes. The Directorate will also start work on what could become national guidelines on how police should deal with hate crimes.

– Weak data quality is a major challenge with current reporting, writing Børstad. (NTB)
