PST press conference

Believe source protection is not applicable

Concern for investigation emphasized in the District Court ruling.

“It seized material, which includes an interview with NN (18-year-old, journ.anm.), believed to be significant as evidence in the case. Furthermore, it appears that the seized material is believed to be significant as evidence in investigations against others suspected of recruiting members of terrorist organization, “writes the court ruling said.

Rolfsen lawyer has argued that the footage can help to reveal sources that until now has been unknown, and that Rolfsen therefore has the right to protect their sources.

The court writes that Rolfsen are entitled to this protection, but this is not applicable because the other persons who are on the recording is also known from the documents.

PST must therefore maintain the seizure of video material.

– My work is seriously hampered

Like his lawyer is Ulrik Imtiaz Rolfsen disagree Court’s conclusion because he believes the police in this case has limited his ability to educate the community about the Islamist scene in Norway.

– The press should not go in the way of the police, but the press has a different task than the police namely uncover important issues in society, says Rolfsen.

Ulrik Imtiaz Rolfsen fear this ruling could have serious consequences, both for him and other journalists.

– My work is seriously hampered because I no longer have confidence in these groups. I think what I make is important for society and can provide insight into a closed environment. I fear that this stretches the boundaries of what police can do in such cases.

Dilemma

During a press conference Friday afternoon underlines PST chief Benedicte Bjørnland that it is very rare that PST looking cases where they find it necessary to rummage filmmakers or journalists.

– I see that the matter is a dilemma. But should be careful not to use coercive measures that can be calming for journalistic work, and it should be done only when there is only strictly necessary. But the merits clarification was more important than a documentary capers work, she says.

Claiming he was conducting humanitarian work

18-year-old denies guilt and declared released under remand hearing 10. June. He claims he was heading to Syria to engage in humanitarian work, but PST believes he would join the terror group IS.

The recordings were seized during a raid by filmmaker 9 June. Rolfsen says the footage shows 18-year-old and Islamist Ubaydullah Hussain headed to Gothenburg.
