Police guard outside draws exhibition in Norway – VG

LONDON / OSLO (AP) Police stood guard with several patrols as an exhibition persecuted avistegnere opened in Stavanger on Thursday.

– The persecution is different in different countries. We look harassment from both politicians and religious groups. French Charlie Hebdo was attacked not only from Islamists, but actually also from Catholics. One of the cartoonists who dwells in Norway now, from Syria. He escaped after one of his draws colleagues were arrested and disappeared in Syrian prisons, and another colleague were brutally beaten up, my arm was broken and fingers broken.



Illustrators worldwide

Here are some of the applicants on the exhibition:

Molly Norris, draw, USA

Created in 2010 website “Everybody Draw Mohammed Day”. Was threatened with death by a US-Yemeni mullah, and given a new identity by the FBI, living in hiding.

Jiffry Yoonoos, draftsman, Sri Lanka:

Created in 1992 drawings that were critical of then President Ranasinghe Primada. Was beaten, stabbed and the house ransacked. Threatened to be killed if he still subscribed series that was critical of the president.

Mana Neyestani, Iran:

Had to leave the country after Having signed a cockroach who spoke a special dialect, this was perceived as insulting and led to demonstrations with demands to kill him. Now lives in exile.

Jonathan Shapiro, South Africa:

Threatened and sued by President Jacob Suma, who believed that his drawings injured his dignity and reputation.

Musa Kart, Turkey:

Was sued by Turkish Prime Minister and sentenced to a fine, but the Supreme Court overturned the verdict. A lower court acquitted Map because people in the public spotlight must withstand both praise and criticism.

Fadi Abou Hassan, Palestine:

Fled from Damascus in Syria in 2013 after having made a drawing illustrating hunger: drawing of a starving child in front of a bunch of empty plates. Arrested and tortured for having opposed the regime.

Abduallahi Mihiaddin, Somalia:

Original graffiti artist, later newspaper cartoonist, had flee because both rulers and rebels threatened him. Now lives in Norway.

Akram Raslan, Syria:

Status: disappeared. Was abducted from the office of the newspaper he worked for and have disappeared. Estimated killed.
