Record number of social assistance – Romsdals Budstikke

The government spent over six billion on social assistance last year, an increase of 8 percent from the year before. In Sandnes increased expenditure on social assistance by 19 percent and Norwegian by 15 percent.

Mayor Stanley Wirak (Ap) in Sandnes is concerned that an increasing number of industries affected by unemployment.

– now unemployment is rising sharply. There is a full stop, for engineers, IT people and people who work in the oil industry, and now also for construction, and for more and more subjects, he says to NRK.

According to Statistics Norway (SSB ) unemployment is the factor affecting social assistance most and in oil-dependent Rogaland unemployment highest in the country.

But it is not only in Sandnes payments to social assistance increases. In Oslo, it rose by 15 percent last year compared with the previous year.

Labour and Social Anniken Hauglie (H) shows that there are jobs available in many places in the country. She believes the increase has different explanation depending on where in the country you are.

– It has increased unemployment in parts of the country, coupled with a high immigrant stream. It is the groups who are vulnerable in terms of economy, and this is reflected in social budgets. It just shows how important it is that we are now able to get more people into work and fewer on benefits, she says.
