The farmer at Gran Oppland was to deliver her daughter at school on Wednesday morning when the neighbor called and told that it overturned black smoke coming out of the ventilation system in the pigsty.
It was a sad sight that met him when he came home:
– It was a shock. Soot belched. It was silent, there was no sign of life. When I got looked over a bit, there was one pig survived, says pig farmer.
196 of 197 pigs lay dead in the pens. Many of them were pregnant sows.
It was Avisa Hadeland who first publicized case Thursday.
Carbon Monoxide Poisoning may be causing
The farmer had now cold spell set up a diesel-powered heat gun in the barn to keep the temperature. Preliminary research suggests that animals may have died as a result of carbon monoxide from this heat cannon.
– It must have happened some with oven. Police have now taken it with him to investigate it, says Gamkinn NRK.
Police has done research on the farm. They believe that carbon monoxide is the likely cause of the sudden deaths.
– We imagine that it could be related to the heat source in the barn, said sheriff in Gran and Lunner sheriff’s office, Frank Magne Sletten.
– Is it so far any kind of suspicion directed against animal owner?
– yet we can not say anything about it. I assume that further investigation will identify the circumstances around the use of the equipment and the animals died.
They should examine the animal owner Thursday night.
– An animal tragedy
FSA is also connected to the case. They sent five pigs to the Institute for an autopsy.
– It may seem that this is an acute event. There are thankfully rare, we have animal rage values with as many animals failing acute in this way, says Astrid Ham, head of department for newspaper Hadeland.
The 196 animals are now sent for destruction. The farmer does not deny that what happened has been a strain.
– I do not know if it has gone way up for me yet, it has gone in one afterwards. It is a costly tragedy, there is no more to say about it, says pig farmer, Hans Jørgen Gamkinn
One pig who survived, are doing so far good.
– It goes well with it. FSA considered that if it is not broke, it should be euthanized, but so far it looks good, says Hans Jørgen Gamkinn
