Now we propose a local politician in Stjørdal that airport name be changed to “Hell International Airport.”
Featured in several media
The debate on the airport’s name came up as a curiosity in the municipal council of Trøndelag assessment – the process of county merger between the two Trøndelag counties.
– We were more like his eyes twinkle advocated that we should take back ownership of the airport name. It is the Stjordal and North Trondelag, says MDG politician Tommy Reinås, which came with the proposal, in a comment to Trønder-Avisa.
Dagbladet he elaborates the idea, which was picked up by several local newspapers today after being told almost as joke in the municipal board meeting.
With a twinkle in his eye
– If you talk to people in Oslo, they say that they have never been in Nord-Trondelag, but that they have been in Trondheim, and how did they get there? Yes, when they prove that they actually landed in Stjørdal, says nordtrønderen.
The name change is not something he will work to implement as a politician, but the idea seems he is not so foolish:
– Norway is the world known that we have a place called “Hell”. Travelling into the world, they have not necessarily heard of other Norwegian cities, but Hell they have heard about in the States, says Reinås, which itself is Hell-patriot, resident of Hell.
One thing is the English meaning of the place name. On Norwegian signals “Hell” something far kosligere, namely luck or happiness, points Reinås who think names the proposal could lead to many funny situations if it had been introduced:
– Imagine pilot when he enters for landing when: “We hope you will enjoy your stay in Hell,” chuckles he.
Is guidelines
As Reinås expected, is not Airport director Lasse Bardal Avinor too excited about the idea.
– It is laid down some guidelines on how to name the airports, and it is based on the largest city in the area airport is in addition to a local place names. We relate to it, he says.
– Do you think it had caught on?
– There is of course a bit reckless and a bit funny at the same time is not absolutely certain that all connections will be so beneficial. And in Europe we are not so familiar, so having Trondheim name so that people manage to place us, is probably wise, he says laughingly said.
He believes inhabitants of North Trøndelag rather get to have Hell-name as a kind of pet names at the airport.
– The air traffic controllers had its own slogan once, which was “Airport within close to Hell,” so if we’re in an opportunity to do something fun, we get well maybe stick to it, says he cheated.
