– Hope for animals legal protection
The case led to strong reactions, both locally and on the national level. Several hundred people – many with dogs – gathered for a memorial for the dead dog. Animal Protection Alliance offered a bounty of 10,000 dollars for clarifying tips.
Animal Protection Alliance say they are glad that the police and prosecutors have taken the matter seriously.
– This gives hope for animals legal protection, says information manager and lawyer in Animal Protection Alliance, Live Kleveland.
They still think the punishment is too low, and that they had hoped for at least a year in prison.
– There is no doubt that the general level of such criminal cases must up. Sentencing in the Lucas case shows a marked increase, and we hope this gives a clear signal to the community that animal cruelty is not tolerated. Lucas case set an example that we should ensure are followed up, says Kleveland.
Undone
The owner said to Dagbladet in February that he regretted what he had done.
– I would not have done it again. Many people who commit suicide, do it by drowning, because it is the most humane way, the man said to Dagbladet.
According to the man, who had the dog Lucas on probation with his girlfriend, the dog was problematic. It must repeatedly have been talking about euthanasia, without it was done.
– It was several weeks, and I see that it would be better to travel to the vet. The dog had a very traumatic life, and had been neglected, he says.
