Turned back and finger Jimmie Åkesson – Dagbladet.no

Turned back and finger Jimmie Åkesson – Dagbladet.no

(Dagbladet): About 150 people met at 13.30 o’clock today up outside Parliament to show both their support and disgust to the Sweden Democrats (SD) and its leader Jimmie Åkesson (35).

And it was counter-demonstrators who got the most attention, as they did yesterday in Nyköping. About 40 people stood in front Åkesson backs on him. Throughout the 30-minute speech, they stood and shouted the following:

– No racists in our streets.

At the same time they clapped their hands, showed finger, threw out small appliances that make no noise, and it can also seem like they threw out the odor bombs.

– “Nazi Party Swedes – GO HOME” stood on one of the counter-demonstrators signs.

Åkesson had a police escort through the streets of Oslo and spoke with a massive police presence around him. After the speech he told Dagbladet that they have experienced similar on previous events in Sweden, but that they did not think it would happen in Norway.

– I had not imagined this in Norway. I thought Norwegians were more tolerant and accustomed to a more open debate.

First time in Norway

The speech of Jimmie Åkesson began by saying that the Sweden Democrats have never before been in Oslo, but because today is between 80 000-100 000 80 000-100 000 Swedes in Norway, and 50 000 of them in Oslo, so they wanted to meet potential voters.

The party is likely to play a more important position in the Swedish parliament after the elections on 14 September. Several Swedish parties will head to Norway to reach out to the Swedes who stay here.

The tens of thousands of Swedes who live and work in Norway was also an important element in Åkessons speech.

– Many Swedes go to Norway to work because it is so hard to get a job in Sweden. Especially for young people. It should not be so one has to move to another country because there are no jobs in Sweden, he said.

The blame for this problem he put on the government which has now ruled in Sweden for eight years.

– We must learn from Norway and grow through the use of our own labor. We have had a right government in Sweden for eight years, and it has led to higher unemployment, especially among young people, he said.

Fans

It was however not only counter-demonstrators who had come outside Parliament. Between 50 and 60 supporters of Åkesson and Sweden Democrats stood and watched in his message, but it was not easy to distinguish between them and counter-demonstrators.

Because of the noise opponents made was Åkesson and his colleague from Gothenburg Jörgen Fogelklou after a while had to ask them to calm down.

– Excuse me, can the quieter please calm down? We can not hear ourselves think here, said Fogelklou.

This was overheard by the loud crowd, so politicians were just going to have to block counter-demonstrators.

Won criticism

– We need more immigration certain policy, and we must achieve a more nuanced debate than the one taking place in Sweden now. We all need to be more self-critical and become more nuanced, Åkesson said from the pulpit.

It was important for them to emphasize that the criticism they have received for their critical attitude towards immigration has not been as black and white as it has been manufactured.

– It’s not like either is completely against immigration or hero. It always exists immigration in Sweden, and there are many with backgrounds in other countries like Sweden do better, said Åkesson.

Swedish Democrats have been criticized from several quarters because of their immigration critical attitude.
