Found dander Kristin aimed at the victim’s fingernails – Oppland Arbeiderblad

The discovery of 38-year-old’s DNA on the fingernails of the murdered Kristin Juel Johannessen (12) resulted in the arrest and new charges in the 16-year-old murder case.

According to police, there were findings of skin cells from the accused 38-year-old on the nails of the murdered 12-year-old who was the turning point in the 16-year-old murder case. The discovery of the so-called epithelial cells was made already in 2006 when the Criminal Police as the unsolved murder case, but only now have new methods and chemicals for DNA testing have been able to provide identification.

– It was found epithelial cells on nails Kristin. How they were deposited, we can not say, but the fact that the cells are there means that there has been close contact between the two. And it is in stark contrast to what he has explained previously, says acting Deputy Police Kjell Johan Abrahamsen in Vestfold police.

Prison

38-year-old who again is charged have killed Kristin Juel Johannessen (12) in 1999, was on Friday remanded for four weeks in Tønsberg Court. The man will be isolated in the first two weeks. He is also subject to letters and visitation and media bans entire detention period.

The man who was first sentenced to 12 years in prison and then later acquitted in the Court of Appeal denies having killed the girl. Although he asked to be released during Friday’s remand in Tønsberg District Court, he understands police need to investigate the new tracks in the case.

– He wants to cooperate with the police and we need to spend some time now to assure the quality of the new evidence the police have come up with, said defender Søren Ø. Hellenes after remand hearing.

– Very strong evidence

Using new methods have expertise in Public Health on behalf of police managed to detect a full DNA profile derived from the accused.

– We believe this proves that the accused was in close contact with the deceased, and in conjunction with the formation of evidence from the investigation, we believe linking the accused to the murder plot said Kjell Johan Abrahamsen at a press briefing after the imprisonment Friday.

– We hope that we are moving towards solving the 16-year-old murder case. Although we believe to sit on very strong forensic evidence, it is important to recall that the case is under investigation, says Abrahamsen.

– Challenge

Director Bente Mevåg at the NIPH says to NTB that there were small amounts of epithelial cells was found, but it was enough to get full identification.

Skin cells are considered to be a poor source for the detection of DNA. Mevåg shows that ordinary people wash their hands several times a day, and many smudging happens every day.

– DNA results in itself says nothing about when the cells are deposited or the manner in which they are deposited. When one uses so sensitive technology as one does, then it is to associate the cells have been identified for the crime a challenge for the prosecutor and the court, says Mevåg.
