- The boys are far behind girls in school – NRK

19 years after school age was lowered by one year, made it still question the effectiveness of the reform. Recent research shows that it is particularly the boys who lose.

– I think we can say that about 20 per cent of boys are in a situation that they have and will continue to have problems in school .

It says professor and head of the Center for practice-based educational research at Hedmark University College, Thomas Nordahl, told NRK.

Loss in several areas

He has been involved in mapping the 1st to 10th graders in Kristiansand municipality, and the results show that many boys are falling behind at school, and scores significantly worse in several areas.

– This applies to academic performance, social competence, particularly in relation to how they adapt to school, and motivation and effort. So the boys are far behind girls in school throughout the race, says Nordahl NRK.

– Representative of the country

“First day in first grade, we should learn us a lot, we say ready and ready to go! “, singing schoolchildren at Grefsen school when they want first grader welcome.

these days, expectant and tense five- and six-year-olds turned up at the school ground with new bag and pencil case across the country.

While teaching staff and principal presents itself says Mads and småhopper. He takes a few dance moves slightly back and forth. It looks like he thinks it’s a bit long to wait for that he gets called up and can come forward and say hello.

– Now I think he is ready for school, but for half a year ago I had enough black, no, he needs a little more time in the nursery, the mother says Mads, Kine Haaland Ash and says that they have done some things at home. She think also it can be challenging for him to sit still in the chair.

Nordahl believes that the results from Kristiansand gives an indication of how things are nationwide.

– This municipality is large enough that these results probably are pretty representative of how boys and girls have in Norwegian schools, and we’ve found something similar in previous studies where other municipalities have been involved.

– Maybe school is more suitable for girls?

Professor of Education at the University of Oslo, Stein Erik Ulvund asks whether Norwegian schools best suited for girls. He believes troubled boys get more negative attention and says they’re going into a negative spiral.

– The boys are losers in the school system, he says to NRK and shows that there are more boys with behavioral problems supports educational psychology service and that they are in the majority when looking at the dropout rate in high school.

– Maybe school is more suitable for girls? The boys are more restless, they have a harder time concentrating and they get more negative attention and get into a vicious circle.

Ulvund is quick to emphasize that he has not fully research evidence to say that the guys struggle more in school and says there is a simple explanation why Norwegian boys being overtaken by their male classmates.

A large study from NOVA in 2014 shows that girls get better grades in all subjects, except gym. In recent years girls have taken over dominance in higher education and is now the majority of prestige studies as medicine and law.

– Lifting interruption

When the reform of primary education was introduced in 1997, it was stated that the first year of school must be adapted to kindergarten children.

– But the problem is that you have not followed up the promise that learning happens through play for the youngest, says Ulvund.

He believes there has been a high learning pressure, both from politicians, teachers and parents for the children, saying that the exercising social skills through play is equally important.

– Training on social skills and play go hand in hand, ‘he says, recalling that it can be extremely wide variations among the children.

– the difference between those born in January and those born in December could certainly be very large with two such young students, he notes.

Calls for more male teachers

the fact that the boys manage the transition from kindergarten to school worse than girls give teachings a great responsibility he said.

– They must ensure that students are doing well socially, both boys and girls. The boys learn better if they get to learn through play and more practical tasks, he said.

Ulvund mean more male teachers in schools should be a goal to work towards.

– I think there are many guys who need a male role model. It’s a challenge to get more male teachers in the youngest classes, it is very skewed way it is today.

Minister Torbjørn Røe Isaksen (H) said in a live interview in Dagsrevy studio Monday that the results that boys are hanging by showing that “although there is much good being done in Norwegian schools, so you still have a job to do.”

– there are two things that are important then. We can not let go of some children, before they have learned the very basic, says Røe Isaksen

– The second is that we start with a sore curriculum change in school . Then we provide more space for varied teaching and depth learning so that one gets the chance to delve into if you need more time.

– Do not know what we’re doing wrong

He says this is a trend in many countries, and that one does not exactly know what is being done wrong.

– We know what makes them fall behind. They learn not to read, write, calculate, the basic things.

– We see a clear connection if you fail to break read the code, do not learn to master reading in early school years, then chances are greater for to do poorly in school and that later you fall from high school
