Thus the new Utøya – VG

Soon says new Utøya ready for the first summer camp since the terror 22 July 2011. AUF leader Mani Hussaini rejoicing.

– Bakken is going to be full of youths on August 6, says AUF leader Mani Hussaini and points to the famous grassy slope where AUF youth have flocked every summer for years.

6.-9. August, the first summer camp at Utøya since the fatal day of 22 July 2011. The last four years have been used to plan how Utøya would reuse. After extensive development and reconstruction stands island ready soon.

Important work

– The work we are doing now is very important. It’s about how we safeguard your memories after 22 July while facilitating new generations, says Hussaini.

77 people were killed in attacks on Utøya and in government building on July 22, 2011. Mani Hussaini was elected AUF leader last year. The aftermath of the 22 July terror has been the more challenging part of the task he undertook.

Some 45 million and countless volunteer hours number is put into the reconstruction of the island. Voluntary willingness has been great, can Hussaini tell.



– Good to get on

Leader in support group, Lisbeth Røyneland, think it is good that young people should get occupy the island again.

Røyneland lost his daughter Synne (18) on Utøya that fateful day almost four years ago. Since March this year, she has led the National Support Group for the 22 July events. It has helped her get ahead in life.



High ceilings

Much is preserved. The main house, storehouse and barn standing in a huddle next to the famous “hill.” Parts of the café building will be preserved, and around they should build “Hegne house.” 69 poles with roofs will surround built in memory of the lives that were lost. Hit AUF will invite school groups to learn about what happened.

– The café is a place where we lost many members. Therefore we have decided to take care of it and defend it, says Hussaini.

He shows off a new and large buildings close by including to work as kitchen and canteen. It is built in a simple style, with a remarkably high ceiling.

– It symbolizes our great headroom. Here are the ideas, thoughts and opinions are welcome.

The meeting with the memorial

The tour continues to the new memorial. Down the last part of the road goes Mani Hussaini hand in hand with Lisbeth Røyneland. They stood looking at the place where the daughter of Lisbeth’s name is engraved.

– This place is to honor those we lost. For me this ring symbolizes an eternity and fellowship. And so shall it always be said Hussaini.

A good balance

Tent space is the same place as before. Kjærlighetsstien pump house and school house also stands again as before. All are places with a lot of strong memories associated with them.

While having Hussaini been here every year since 2007, except for 2011. This year alone he has had 40-50 trips to Utøya. It has been hectic. Much will be made before summer camp is held, and many opinions and feelings are to be met.

– What has been the most challenging in this process?

– There have been both emotional and nice to work with this. I feel honored to be come a step further in its efforts to make Utøya to the place it should be, says AUF leader.



Controversial

Then AUF presented plans for “new Utøya” was originally proposed that the café building was demolished. Development plans have engaged many concerned and bereaved. The relatives tried to stop development on Utøya, but has not attained the complaint with Hole municipality last year. It was nevertheless decided that the cafe building was to stand.

Some of the affected felt neither ready for development when the work started, and some disagreed with the decision to organize summer camp on Utøya year.

– We understand that not everyone wants to go back now. But everyone is welcome, both old AUF-ers and new, says Mani Hussaini.

– You do not feel that you step on some toes?

– I think this has been a good process in cooperation with the support group. The result we have reached must show a form of balance. Utøya is going to be a place where we remember the comrades we lost. There will also be a place for youthful political involvement. In addition there will be an institution where one can learn about the ideals that were attacked, he said.



– Will create new memories

Hussaini says he loves the recent run-up of the work on Utøya.

– I feel it is so important the work we do. The camp in August, special and worthy, and I am really looking forward to it. It is good that the youth should make creating new memories here again, says AUF leader.

Must attend all

Lisbeth Røyneland says that the support group has received many inquiries as a result of the July 22 center and the expansion of Utøya. She believes Utøya going to be a good place for the affected again.

– How does you those who do not believe development is right?

– We have very many collections via county associations. Members are well looked after there. In addition we have the first major nationwide survival collection in September, she says, and admits that the support group has been forced to deal with many reactions during the construction process.

Although she experience being back on Utøya as therapy . She hopes many will experience the same in the future.

– Now when I come out on a day of good weather I can hardly understand that it happened here. But we must never forget the scale of what happened, or forget what radicalization can result in extreme cases, says Røyneland.

In the future, hoping that Utøya AUF can be used for more than summer.

– Utøya now has more features than before, says AUF leader Hussaini.
