Greater resistance to beef fee – Aftenposten

A report project in Civita, Paul Joakim Sandøy, has authored concludes that agriculture is devoid of climate policy. He now wants to impose a tax on meat and cheese.

Read the case here: Introduce climate tax on meat and cheese in Norway

If implemented emission reduction measures it should lead to a reduction in the fee, he said.

Government parties disagree

Jørgen Næsje (FRP) said Thursday that the government had plans to taxing foods such as meat from sheep and cow . Also Conservative parliamentary group joins the Treasury Department statement, according to Joachim Meier Svendsen, press officer for the party.

Among the Government’s support parties, there is also opposition to such a tax.

Deputy Chairman of the Left, Olav Elvestuen , believes the solution is simple. He points out that it was set up a committee to look at agriculture.

– Agriculture can both cut their own emissions, contribute to higher carbon sequestration and preserve the cultural landscape. It’s good Civita involved, but here they do question too simple.

But one thing he gives Civita right:

– We need to get people to eat less meat.

Also deputy chairman of the Christian Democratic Party, Olaug Bollestad believes Civita booms.

– We have a high consumption. If Norwegian farmers stop producing such goods we buy them from abroad instead. An air surcharge for many small farmers become so severe that it ends but depletion of Norwegian agriculture. It’s not that agriculture should not be concerned with climate and gjøsdsel they use, but if you want local food needs community and consumers will be paying.

She is hesitant to Civitas views on agriculture.

– It’s a bit especially with such a tax when Civita will open up import tariffs to countries that are not as strict in production as Norway has. It says something about the sight of Norwegian agriculture.

– Bureaucratic

Also, the Green Party believes that the measure is too simple.

– All proposals to include environmental costs in prices is good. But this is an example of Civita has a job to do when it comes to understand the totality of the environment and resource thinking. Removing the Norwegian cow, and instead favor chicken and pork are the exact opposite of an environmental measure, saying parliament Rasmus Hansson.

He believes a fee is bureaucratic.

– We suggest remove mums on fruit and vegetables. Then in practice given a competitive advantage for environmentally friendly production. It’s easier than people to send receipts to prove the use of biological fertilizers to the agricultural ministry for caricaturing it a bit.

Also Socialist Youth disagrees with the measure.

– This does not less meat consumption, but to fewer could afford steak. Civita has been looking to take Norwegian agriculture for several years, this is a poor excuse for distriktfientlig policy. There are no more climate friendly that we instead of consuming meat from the Norwegian mountains importing meat from Argentina, says SU leader Nocholas Wilkinson.

– It is a pity that one should mistenkliggjøre apart so. Civita will take climate battle, even where it is not easy. That does not mean we will not cut in other sectors too, says Sandøy.

Getting support from agriculture lecturer

– Civita has a point in that consumption of meat must come down. I’m no economist, but if we manage to reduce the consumption and production of red meat with such a fee is fine, says Thomas Cottis. He is Assistant Professor in agriculture, and trained agronomist. In addition, he runs even farm where he produces grain, milk and meat.

He thinks it is right to put duties on imported meat in the same way as meat produced in the country.

– We impoterer already much red meat. Most of the meat we import contributes to greater greenhouse gas emissions than Norwegian red meat, because of transport and more extensive animal husbandry, said Cottis.

He believes public health is an important factor in the discussion.

– We must open a public health discussion in which we are calling for lower meat consumption. I invite Civita to join further discussion on how a fee can be arranged.

Cottis thinks that cheese and milk should not be taxed, since this is not bad for the environment or public health.
