The dead whale that has been starting to explode, was Sunday afternoon shot and punctured by the Coast Guard.

– The whale is shot at with machine guns, a machine of coarser caliber that is 12.7 millimeters, said duty officer Leif-Owe Birkeland VG 15 o’clock.

Much of the air had already seeped out of the dead whale having been in tow behind KV “Bergen” out at sea outside Bergen Sunday.

Now the whale, which probably is a humpback or fin whales, below sea level and will eventually be consumed by other animals.

– It was shot in the stomach region, where it was thickest. The inflated “belly” punctured and the rest of the gas came out, says Birkeland.

KV “Bergen” found themselves Sunday afternoon 35 nautical mil – around 60 kilometers – away from the coast west of Sandøy outside Bergen that ship traveled from Saturday night.

Coast Guard wanted to carry the carcass so far out to avoid hitting the boat traffic on the coast nor are washed back ashore.
