The road opened in summer. Already there have been two major landslide on the route. – Bergens Tidende

– Now it breeds in places where we could not predict it.

Saturday around 15:45 hours went there again on landslide E39 at Dregbøvatnet in Gaular municipality.

Trees, soil and rocks blocked parts of the road, and it was partially closed beyond Saturday evening.

Jens Henrik Wolk Friis drove past the place immediately after the slide was passed Saturday.

– I and a few other cars drove past the vehicle on the right side. I came from Forde. As I drove through, I saw that several of those who worked at the site ran away. It scampered new stones down the road. It was a little scary, and I had enough not run through again, says Friis.

Brand new road

The line is brand new. The new road between Vadheim and Sande opened with pomp and ceremony on June 28 in summer.

When it had already experienced a massive landslide. January 29 was a truck that drove by paving crushed by a huge landslide in the same area as Saturday’s landslide. The driver dropped thankfully away with horror.

– Yes, that’s probably roughly the same place. I can not look at the pictures where the last slide has passed, but it’s not far from where the first went, confirms Svein Reidar Dale NPRA.

He was project manager during construction of the E39 Sande – Vadheim. One purpose of the new road system, was to secure for landslides. Among other things, set up new catch fences after the incident in January.

– Fence can not stop the huge landslide

When BT speak Dale, he has just learned about Saturday’s landslide.

– What do you think about that it’s been two major landslides already, in such a new way?

– no, it turns out well that it now goes landslides where we could not predict it. The weather is changing and the races where you’re not used to. This part of the road are actually in an area where hillsides goes high up, but we had geologists on site to find areas susceptible to landslides, says Dale.

Officially there are two routes: E39 Dregebø-Grytås and Birkeland Sande Nord9,1 kilometer new road. 8300 meters open road and 800 meters tunnel.Kostnad 575 million purpose: avalanche, remediation and Shortening of the road and relieve the traffic in Sande center.

He says that several places were blown away avalanche masses mountainside during the work on the new road. It was also set up traps fences along parts of the route. The landslide Saturday went straight through such a fence.

– After the landslide in January we expanded catch fences, but I do not know if today’s landslide is gone there, or in an area where we had fences before, says Dale.

– Is there any help in such a fence, when we see what happened today?

– Yes, they can stop a great deal. But it is clear, they are more intended for situations where it is easy stones or small masses down. A large landslide there are no fences that can stop.

Does the same route as before

When the new stretch of road was opened in June, was praised words many.

– this gives an alarm one of the poorest sections of the E39, said County Mayor Jenny Følling on opening day.

Mayor Mathias Råheim in Gaular followed:

– this is the end of noise and dangerous situations in Sande, he said.

After two landslides on the route, says Dale that obviously have to consider whether it is possible to do more to prevent landslides. But moving way, is impossible.

– In this part of the E39 road in roughly the same route as it did previously. It is so tight between water and mountainside that there are no other options, he said.

– Insanely precipitation

Mayor Mathias Råheim says he has thought about the issue.

– it’s sad when we have got awesome new way, that it will be closed due to landslides twice. However, it has not cared to race there before. There have been some outrageous rainfall lately. I do not know if there’s so much we can do to protect ourselves for races, says Råheim.

Gaularfjell mayor asks nevertheless Road Administration reassess whether there is anything that can be done.

– Catch fences has to be set up again. There is also a possibility that it was fully behind the catch fence of rasmateriale from before, and that this slide therefore went over. In this case, one can get better procedures to inspect fences, says Råheim.
