– Based on the situation and the issues raised around police contact with 37-year-old ahead of the murder, I have found it appropriate to send the case to the Norwegian Bureau for the Investigation of Police Affairs on its own initiative, says Police Chief Ellen Katrine Hætta in Finnmark Police in a press release.
for NRK she elaborates:
– It is important for our society and for us that we now have carried out an independent assessment.
– is there anything you’re unsure when it comes to meeting with the woman last week?
– as things stand now we believe that we handled the case as well as we could. We still choose and engage the Bureau to be absolutely sure. Society is entitled to an independent review, said Hætta NRK.
Service Neglect
Pimsiri Songngam (37) and her son Petchngam (12) was on Monday night shot and Pimsiris 59 years old husband has been charged in the case.
the head of the Women’s Shelter, Tove Smaadahl, has said that the police have been guilty of gross misconduct, because they did not use the regular procedure to determine whether Pimsiri was in danger of being subjected to violence.
Pimsiri was in contact with the police twice last week, and the police knew she was going to move into the shelter in Kirkenes Tuesday.
Acting by Nora center, Bjorg-Irene Østrem, told NRK yesterday that anyone who has earned a place in the shelter are victims of violence.
– the do not come here because they lack a place to stay, says Østrem. She believes the police need to sharpen procedures in the face of abused women.
Hætta: Have staked
Chief Ellen Katrine Hætta had big ambitions to combat sexual violence and domestic violence.
– It is important that police meet people in a way that makes us unable to capture and evaluate possible threat situations. We have in recent years increased its focus on domestic violence and the implementation of SARA methodology to assess risks and take action, she says in the press release.
