Meat from animals that are antibiotic resistant bacteria can be a source of infection, and in Denmark, the resistant bacterium MRSA has been detected in far greater extent than in Norway, Dagens Business.

– Antibiotic resistant bacteria is something that worries us, but in this context, we emphasize the signals from the FSA stating that it is safe to import pork from Denmark. After the message, we will make a separate assessment of imports especially pork from Denmark. The level of antibiotic use in Danish pig is worryingly high, says Bård Gultvedt, director of nutrition policy and government relations in Norway Group, told the newspaper.

Norway Group, which is the largest player in the Norwegian grocery industry, says it has very little Danish pork currently, but that imports increase at Christmas time.

chain will consider imports, it means that it will consider whether it is possible to buy pork from other countries with lower levels of antibiotic use instead, says Gultvedt.

assessment will be made in the autumn. (© NTB)
