Health Minister Bent Høie comes with new measures to bring down the use of tobacco in Norway.

Health and Human Services Bent Høie will prohibit the regular tobacco packages and design-snuff boxes.

– Tobacco Package is an important marketing channel. Snuff Boxes is identity design, he says at the press conference with the Cancer Society today.

There he showed up a number of design snuff boxes, including pink boxes that young girls are tempted by.

He said they will introduce the system that is in Australia and introduced in England and Ireland, with standardized tobacco packages.

– We have succeeded in getting young people to quit smoking, but not those who sniffs and smokes. Norway and Sweden differs from the rest of the world, says Høie.

– Many have replaced the smoke with snuff. That means many young start with tobacco, says Bent Høie, he states that snus is less hazardous than smoking, adding that 20 percent of young girls are unable to quit when they become pregnant.

Høie say will not do anything with the actual smoke or snuff. He will not do anything with beer, wine or liquor bottles.

Young people are affected

The boxes should have a dark green color and package design should be similar.

– It is the least attractive color and product name will stand with neutral letters, says Høie.

We know that young people are influenced by the appearance of tobacco packaging. It may be this that gets them to try tobacco for the first time, or leave. There is no one wants children and adolescents to start with tobacco and it is time to put a stop to the marketing of tobacco products aimed at children and young people, he said.

Smoking among young people has fallen steadily it last decade. We have also seen a sharp rise among young people who sniffs the last decade. A third of young men and just under every fourth young woman sniffs.

– The strong increase in smokeless tobacco use among young came after industry began to develop products that appeal to young people. My goal is to prevent children and young people begins with tobacco, says Høie.



Glad proposal

General Anne Lise Ryel Cancer Society says she is very happy government suggestions.

– Tell me what you smoke and I will tell you who you are, she said:

– It’s about the power of advertising on our choices and preferences. We do not want our young to start smoking or start with snuff.

She pulled up a pink snuff box.

– This is trendy, we want your box to be damn boring; to contribute to fewer starts, she said.

Cancer Society refers to a study where young people were asked if they would have liked that little sister would start with snuff or tobacco. 94 percent said no.

– We’re going to be in front again. We are delighted that we have a government that does this, says Ryel.



Increase smuggling

According to trade profession’s trade organization active it has given increased smuggling of cigarettes into the country .
