Four out of ten seamen violate safety rules – Aftenposten

Almost as many say they expose themselves to dangers, writes the business newspaper pursuits.

These figures are revealed in the evidence for a doctoral thesis on Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim.

– There is clearly a lot of frustration among the crew of the Norwegian boats over safety management systems. More experience that complex systems reduces security because it is limited room for estimations in operations on board, says PhD student Kristine Vedal Størkersen said.

Størkersen believes it is a paradox that the number of shipwrecks along the Norwegian coast increased by 24 percent from 2000 to 2012, a period when the current SOLAS regulation was introduced.

– Maritime Security perceived as an expensive item of contractors and therefore downgraded this instead of getting a competitive advantage, says Størkersen.
