– This is a big step. This has been the missing puzzle piece in our research on the sense of place, says Edvard Moser to Adresseavisen.
Researcher pair from NTNU received last year the Nobel Prize in medicine for his discovery of cells that constitute a kind of inner GPS brain. Now they, along with researchers Emilio Kropff and James Carmichael, also found cells that registers speed.
– Speed cells are like a kind of speedometer. The activity in the cells increases as the speed at which the rat moves with widening. This finding is a significant part of the internal map that we’ve worked with in the past decade. The map is dynamic and can not be updated without speed information. Found showing how cells in positioning system work together, says Moser.
The discovery is published in the renowned journal “Nature” and also referred to in the second of the major international science journals.
