No major damage after the storm on Svalbard – Folkebladet

Longyearbyen (NTB): Apart from some minor landslides, there are no reports of major damage after the devastating storm on Svalbard, on the night of Tuesday.

Parts of the dog yard just outside the centre of the Town was destroyed by a landslide Monday night, but otherwise, there are no reports of more damage, notify the Governor of Svalbard on Tuesday morning. The violent storm with large amounts of rain triggered several smaller avalanches on the west side of Spitsbergen.

We are currently working to get an overview of the situation, including with helikopterbefaring with people from the Governor of svalbard, Longyearbyen community council and skredekspert. It is expected more precipitation and rising temperatures at night. We will have a new meeting with the Longyearbyen community council and NVE o’clock 13. We will then together assess the situation and the need for further evacuation, ” says sysselmann Kjerstin Askholt Tuesday morning.

140 people, including 86 students, was still evacuated Tuesday morning.
