Rates summer on the glacier – Dagbladet.no

- There is heat record down in the village, and here on the Folgefonna there has been more snow in a hundred years. There have been some incredible days here, says says Paul Bentsrud at Folgefonna Snowboard and Skicamp.

– Yesterday we were up on the glacier from nine in the morning, and it was a warm Foehn from down in the village. Cross-country guys went shirtless. They have 14 meters snow depth to go on, says Bentsrud.

He describes the going in 25 plus degrees as “an absolutely perfect Easter slush.”

However, the combination of strong summer sun and lots of snow requires precautions:

– It is very easy to get sunburned. One becomes cannon brown, all perfectly black face up here. And people need to wear sunglasses, otherwise they become snow blind once, says Bentsrud.

Folgefonna is Norway’s third largest glacier, with prevalence rates of over 200 square kilometers. It sits on Folgefonn peninsula in Hardanger.

The warm weather in the last week, and large amounts of snow still in the mountains, leading to extra large influx into watercourses.

Now, the Norwegian Water Resources – and Energy (NVE) issued flood warnings with orange code, the second highest alert level.

Areas of Aust-Agder, Buskerud, Hordaland, Møre og Romsdal, Oppland, Hordaland, Sogn og Fjordane and Telemark may be affected.

There are mostly mountain areas in southern Norway can now hit by floods. Here you can see which areas are covered by the notification.
