Therefore crashed ambulance helicopter on Sollihøgda – Aftenposten

The case is updated.

The ambulance helicopter was on its way to a traffic accident at Sollihøgda as it during the landing hit a power line and fell from ca. 25 meters height.

Anesthesiologist Anders Rostrup Nakstad (38) and pilot Bjorn Nergaard (52) died in the accident, while the rescuer was seriously injured. The helicopter was a total loss.

“The current power line was not physically marked and was exceptionally difficult to detect from the air. The investigation has identified weaknesses in communications, digital map system that was in use and the company’s procedures, “said the report from the Accident Investigation Board Norway.

The accident happened on January 14 last year. Earlier, police in Buskerud concluded that the accident was not caused by criminal offenses.



Did not radio contact

The power line was not physically marked, but it was according to the report marked on a digital map and crew was aware that it went lines in the area before they arrived accident. The crew spent however only part of the features of the digital map, because they had found that it had shortcomings.

The personnel on the ground at the scene were aware of the power line and tried to alert but did not radio contact with the pilot crew.

“It has not been possible to establish the reason for this. That accident occurred in a transition zone between analogue and digital network, was a complicating factor for this operation, “the report said.



Three suggestions for improvement

The Commission will report with three recommendations after the accident, which occurred when the helicopter landed in a casualty pocket at E16.

The first recommendation is that just bys – and picnic areas – “as far as practicable should be designed so that they can also serve as safe helicopter landing pad,” partly because that into account “hinder freedom and other relevant factors.”

In addition, recommends the Commission that the Ministry take responsibility for coordinating the work of mapping of obstacles to aviation and updating the national database. The last recommendation is subject to Norwegian Air Ambulance and yesterday that the company should “revitalize” the effort to identify and manage risk by landing on unfamiliar landing.



Air Ambulance measures

Norwegian Air Ambulance has also started its own investigation of the accident. They will give an account of this work and actions taken during a press briefing this afternoon.
