Last year, warned the environmental organization WWF against eating shrimp caught in the Skagerrak and the North Sea – Oslofjord included.
They believed catch in these areas was not carrying crater and led shrimp from here up in “red list” – along with species such as tuna, Norwegian lobster and eel – in its annual seafood guide.
WWF feared partly because småreker was dumped. Now they have turned, Dagsavisen.
The reason? Two new initiatives from the Directorate of Fisheries to improve conditions for the shrimp population in southern Norway.
The measures were presented Thursday are:
- RTC (Real time closure). Fishing Areas may be closed temporarily if they have too large a population of småreker.
- The minimum size is increased. The new requirement for prawns to be sold, is 7 cm (previously 6 cm.)
– That we took the shrimp from the people last year was a shock and a provocation for many, for shrimp and summer interrelated. The fact that we can now give the shrimp back because we are now set to put in place the administrative measures we believe must be done. It’s good for the shrimp population, and it is good for us, says Secretary General Nina Jensen of WWF Dagsavisen.
So therefore you can buy fresh shrimp on the quayside to summer – with a clear conscience.
