– I’ve even worked with refugees in both Africa and the Middle East, and it is quite obvious that the closer instead they flee from one helps them, the better and more help they get, says Arnulf Torbjørnsen NRK.
Torbjørnsen has worked for 20 years in the Norwegian Red Cross, 15 years as Head of Foreign Affairs. He has worked ten years for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) – the organization now responsible for Syria refugees, and he has also been head of MSF.
– You do not have calculator to understand that you can help hundreds of thousands more than ten thousand who eventually allowed to come to Norway, says Torbjørnsen.
He also points out that it is easier to help them return to their home country when the conflict is optionally over whether refugees are in adjacent areas.
Around 3.9 million Syrians are now refugees in neighboring Lebanon, Jordan, Turkey and Iraq. In addition, about twice as many IDPs in Syria.
– The point must be to be as efficient as possible. It is clear that taking refugees to Norway is very good for them to come, but it will be only a drop in the ocean when you look at the millions of refugees who are down there.
The proposal to accept 10,000 additional refugees from Syria comes from Norwegian aid organizations, not from the United Nations. The cost is estimated at 20 billion over ten years. (© NTB)
