More reacted strongly to the bishop refuses to let a lesbian woman to be a priest – Aftenposten

It was Our Country that first brought the news that theology student Hanna Marie Pedersen-Eriksen though it still not being vicar of Sandøy.

Both parish council and the diocesan council wanted Pedersen Eriksen as vicar, but now Møre Bishop Ingeborg Midttømme set foot down. She refuses to ordain Pedersen Eriksen.

The reason is that teoligstudenten is a lesbian and has plans to marry his female lover in the summer.

– Creates loathe church

More react strongly to this, and one of them is Helen Eide, head of Norway’s Student Christian Federation.

She told Aftenposten that she is terribly disappointed that Christian leaders behave this way.

– We believe that priests should be given what they want than they cohabitation . This has meant long.

Furthermore, she explains that it’s silly that Christian leaders to go out so Central Tender has done in this case, especially when Pedersen Eriksen has been approved by both the parish council, the diocesan council and the local community.

– This allows me as theology student does not want to seek employment in Møre. I mean Midttømme this way contributes to the priest shortage, in addition to that she is helping to create an aversion to the church.

Also on Twitter has many responders, including a priest and musician hangnail.

Legal discrimination

Equality and Discrimination ring ombudsman Sunniva Ørstavik says that faith communities have the law on their side when they refuse someone to become a priest because of their sexual orientation.

– This is discrimination, but it is legal, she said.

– I think it is both stupid and unfortunate that there is such a thing, but that’s it. I cheer for all the bishops who see that one can exercise priestly profession regardless of sexual orientation. It also looks as if time jobs Pedersen-Eriksen, and I’m happy.

Read Hanne Marie Pedersen Eriksens own thoughts about their orientation and priestly vocation:

Believes bishop misinterprets canon law

Associate Faculty of Theology at the University of Oslo, Birgitte Lerheim in doubt about the bishop’s move is correct according to canon law.

– This is historically special. It happens that the bishops will not ordain priests in gay relationships, including in Oslo, but the usual practice is that the bishops resolve it between themselves, in that they respect ordained elsewhere than where they are going to work, she says, referring to service scheme for bishops.

She points out that the church has two equal views on homosexuality after synod decision from 2007, and believes Midttømme must consider it.

She believes the bishop is in its full right not to would ordain Pedersen-Eriksen, but that she can not block that lesbians priest ordained topic somewhere else.

– This is an example of the conflict between the locally based democratic be- low from-up church and bispeembedet. Diocese council in Møre want Pedersen-Eriksen, and she is obviously desired by Sandøybotn ward. It is not certain council saw it coming that the bishop was putting his foot down when they made the decision.

– Happens all the time

The parsonage in Brøttum, Siri Sunde, partnered with a woman in 1997, when she was chaplain in Northern Land Council.

The so-called Sunde case caused considerable discussion within the Church, whether gays who had partnered could be a priest in the Norwegian Church.

Sunde is not surprised that Pedersen Eriksen meets resistance.

– Many people think that this does not happen anymore, but it happens all the time that gays are not hired because of their sexuality. The special is that it is a majority in the diocese council of Møre. Bishops viewpoint has long been known, she said.

She nevertheless hope that believers and members of the church do not use the case to take distance from the church.

– I hope many people see that we need committed people who can take us further, such that apparently exists in the Council in Møre, she says.

– This is a qualified, young man, there is a need for priests and she is willing to seek a position. It’s a gust, and very sorry that she is greeted in this way, and it is of a relatively young bishop, she said.

Bishop Ingeborg Midttun have not answered Aftenposten inquiries.
