Høie will make it easier to change legal gender – Aftenposten

“A happy day.” “Like going from hell to heaven.” It was among the reactions in the Norwegian trans person community after a government-appointed committee unanimously advocated that it should no longer be stipulated gender reassignment surgery and sterilization to bring change gender on passports and other identification documents.

– There are absolutely perfect. And much better than I had dared to hope, says John Jeanette Solstad Remø NTB after the report was submitted.

John Jeanette was born in a male body, but has a female gender expression. For over 15 years she has struggled to be recognized in the official papers woman without having to operate between the legs.

– Now it is celebrated. I’ve asked my wife go back pole, tells Remø with a wide smile.

A third gender

During the report ceremony said Health Minister Bent Høie (H) that he believes current practice is unsustainable and must changed. He promises to put forward a bill as quickly as possible.

Høie was challenged by one of the committee members, professor and specialist in clinical sexology Esben Esther Pirelli Benestad, about what he will do when it comes to the issue of introduce a third gender category.

The Commission proposes only that the question must be studied further.

– This has not been a central theme for the committee and is not a question that has become politically entrenched, so I can not comment on yet, says Høie said.

– Not objectives

SV are among those asking Høie go in for a third gender.

– Today’s report is a major step on the road to creating a society of real gender diversity, but we’re not finished with this. About the proposals are adopted, we will still have a system which still allows only two gender categories, male and female. For some people, this goes across self-perceived and biological gender identity, says Change Flatmo, which is the leader in SV LGBT Network

Several countries have introduced a third neutral legal gender, including India, Nepal, Australia, New Zealand and Germany.

Haste

Expert Committee believes it should be sufficient with a declaration to the National Registry to change gender, and does not advocate the so-called reflection period before granted their new gender, as currently in Sweden and Denmark.

A minority, including user organization Harry Benjamin resource (HBRS), wanted however different delay mechanisms. HBRS mean a reflection period of six months had been sensible.

– We see that the reasons of wanting change genders can be diverse and that many have tremendous hurry. We have seen cases where this has gone wrong and that there were other reasons for wanting to switch genders, says Mikael Scott Bjerkeliveien said.

Decentralized offer

The committee also proposes several changes the current health care for people who are experiencing kjønnsdysfori, ie mismatch between legal gender and own gender identity.

The Committee believes more should receive treatment, and they go in for a more decentralized treatment. Today only offer at Rikshospitalet in Oslo. (© NTB)
