NPE: Around thousand patient deaths could have been avoided – Aftenposten

In most cases the cause of death of one form or another for failure by health care.

– We believe that these patients most likely would have survived if they had received appropriate treatment or if the correct diagnosis had been posed before, according to Rolf Gunnar Jørstad in NPE.

He says that it has made an impression to go through the 1029 cases.

– We are unfortunately many examples of delayed cancer diagnosis, incorrect assessment of labor, insufficient protection of patients with suicide risk and poor follow-up of patients after surgery. This is a strong reminder of how important good practices and appropriate expertise is in health, says Jørstad.

It was in the period between 2005 to 2014 paid NOK 315 million in compensation to relatives.

Health Minister Bent Høie (H) is not happy with the situation.

– Engaging in advanced patient care involves a risk, but these figures show that one does not take the risk of sufficient severity. Therefore, we must work with culture, better systems and, not least, this is about leadership, he says to NRK.
