Scope of escapes unclear – NRK

It was Saturday Fisheries was notified of Marine Harvest that it was discovered the escape of salmon from Black Mountain in Kvænangen municipality.

escapes were discovered when the company was moving fish. In the affected cage there were around 186,000 fish.

– we do not know how big the scope is, but we investigate further now, says communications manager Eivind Nævdal-Bolstad.

He would not say whether there could be a greater amount of fish that were in the cage, but the company has faced Fisheries estimated about 10,000 salmon.

He said Marine Harvest takes very seriously the matter.

– An escaped fish is one too many, we have a zero vision, he said, adding that they keep on investigating how this incident has occurred .

Acting Head of Section in the Directorate of Fisheries Region Troms, Rune Rasmussen, said they are working to determine the scope.

– We are considering sending a man to Kvænangen on inspection to find out what has happened and how extensive this is, he says.

Administrator in the Directorate of Fisheries says they are working to find out of the scope.

It should be made recapture around the cage.

– This is a clear indication that it is escaped salmon in the area, and we are now together with the County Governor of Troms expanding recapture the area to limit the damage.

The inner part of Kvænangen, the area within the bridge at Straumen, is a national salmon, because of the wild salmon population that spawns in rivers in inner Kvænangen.

Marine Harvest is the largest aquaculture company and took over some years ago Jøkelfjord salmon. Since the company has been Kvænangen largest private workplace and they have big development plans. The Company has therefore applied for new licenses in the area and received an exemption from the coastal zone plan for new construction, which has created reactions in the community.
