At the end of May, the Directorate of Immigration (UDI) received a total of 3,470 asylum applications. At the same time last year had 4,139 foreigners applied for asylum in Norway. May figures this year, however in line with last year’s figure of just over 1,200 people. It always comes most asylum seekers in the warmest season.
One in four applicants this year come from Eritrea, a total of almost 900 people. Syrians is in second place with 463 applicants.
It also increases the number of unaccompanied minors seeking asylum markedly. So far this year there have been 652 children without parents. At the same time last year the figure was 417. Nearly 500 of these young people come from Eritrea and Syria. The rest are from Somalia, Ethiopia and Syria, according to UDI.
While unaccompanied minors accounted for 10 percent of the applicants at the end of last May, represents the year 19 percent of the total number of applicants. Practically all unaccompanied minor asylum seekers are given permanent residence in Norway. (© NTB)
