Person attacked by polar bears in Svalbard – Aftenposten

– What we know and what we go out with, is that a tour mates of six people are attacked by bears at Fredheim, said the governor’s chief Vidar Arnesen Svalbard Post.

Flown to Longyearbyen

– The person who was attacked, were flown to Longyearbyen, and the doctor here confirms that only talk about wounds, and that he is bruised. In addition, one person taken to treatment for frostbite, but it is independent of the episode with the bear, says Arnesen said.

– The bear is shot, he adds.

There are five to six mil to run with scooter to Fredheim, northeast of Longyearbyen.

– We are investigating on the spot, but has not complete overview of events yet, Arnesen says. He can not yet say anything about which country traveling companions come from or how they had come to Fredheim.



Heavy traffic

It is expected many visitors to Svalbard in connection with the total solar eclipse Friday.

Already two months ago let Governor out practical information to the visitors. There are bears risk an important factor and people who want to leave the settlement “must have adequate protection against polar bears.”

The last fatal bear attack in Svalbard was in 2011 when a British school group were attacked. A 17 year old student died. (© NTB)
