24,000 gallons of fuel spilled out at Bergen Airport Flesland – Aftenbladet.no

24,000 gallons of fuel spilled out at Bergen Airport Flesland – Aftenbladet.no

In early February rant 24,000 liters of fuel for jets out of the facility to Flytanking AS Flesland.

– We have had an accident at the storage facility at the airport. It happened around the 10th of February, and was discovered it a few days afterwards, says managing director Tomas Jacobsson to Bergens Tidende .

The incident allegedly took place in connection with a tank filling, where it should have happened overfilling.

Emissions reason

– We have received emissions in land and oil separator. When we discovered oil on the creek behind the facility was laid out booms to stop further emissions, says Jacobsson.

He believes there is no talk of a large spill in the creek, and the company has started to pump up fuel. Jacobsson can neither confirm nor deny that 24,000 liters has drained out, as the figure coastal plant operates.

– The number can be both larger and smaller, said Jacobsen, who says it’s launched an internal investigation of events.

Serious environmental harmful potential

On Flesland Airport confirms that the situation is now under control

– This is an event that has a serious environmental harmful potential, and therefore, the airport has made efforts to prevent it getting environmental consequences. It is laid out booms and made measures sugebil taking up any fuel that flows away from the plant. Currently there are no emissions injuries, we believe, says Øystein Skaar, the operational commander at the airport.

– Was there ever a danger of explosions and fire?

– This is a fuel facility that is built on the east side of the runway, the defense areas. Far away from both aircraft and passengers, says Skaar.

– Very serious

This was acute pollution and an event we certainly should have been besides, says Kjell miljøvernsjef Kvingedal by governor of Hordaland.

– It is very serious that so much fuel can flow out of a tank on the second largest airport, he said.

Kvingedal says he got the case on the table right before the weekend. We will now follow up after work and ensure that all steps to clean up is taken, he said.

The county governor may impose fines on the company if they deem it necessary.

– Normally it will not be necessary orders in such cases because the tortfeasor like are strongly motivated to clean up, says Kvingedal.

– Not advised

Bergen municipality was not informed about the case when BT called Sonja Monica Skotheim, head of the department of environmental health. The office’s responsibilities include overseeing all of the biological, chemical and physical factors in the environment that could directly or indirectly affect health.

– We must be informed of such incidents. I can not say whether there has been a danger of drinking water in the area, but will raise the issue as soon as I come to work tomorrow, says Skotheim.

– Poor hedging

Naturvernforbundet tells that it is rare to talk about the release of this magnitude.

– It sounds fortunately rare. I can not remember that such large quantities has drained before, says manager Lars Haltbrekken.

The company can not have everything on care, he said.

– For the 24,000 liters of fuel will drain out, one must have pretty bad fuse. Here it clean long, says Haltbrekken.

– Why is fuel very serious for the environment?

– Because it can contaminate groundwater and poison people, but now I do not know how groundwater conditions are Flesland. It could also drain into streams and rivers, and mean death for birds that come in contact with the fuel. In addition, it will kill other life in the water, says Haltbrekken.
