KrF ensures probably majority to remove the jury system – Aftenposten

– It is high time that the jury system is repealed and replaced with meddomsrett. Jury scheme is outdated and weakens legal protection, says deputy Kjell Ingolf Ropstad the justice committee in Parliament to VG.

He says that the jury did not justify their decisions, and that it therefore can not be established whether the decisions taken at the proper foundation and whether the evidence is considered correct and the law applied in the right way.

If the proposal is adopted, it means that ten lay judges should no longer be able to decide the question of guilt in serious criminal cases in the Court of Appeal alone. The scheme has existed since 1887.

In a meddomsrett, which currently handles cases where the penalty is up to six years in prison, the average man and woman still in the majority – four lay judges against three professional judges.

Right and FRP stated in the Government’s declaration that the jury system should be changed, and Labor has decided to replace it with a meddomsrett. Thus it is a majority in Parliament for a change.

Court Administration (DA) set positively to the proposal.
